Week 3 Blog: Careers

After graduating high school, I would like to attend a 4-year college, preferably somewhere with a strong emphasis on student life and a student-oriented community. I hope to major in kinesiology or exercise science.

Here are 3 Careers that can branch off of either of those two majors listed above:

Personal Trainer:

- Most personal trainers begin with a starting salary of $20,000 dollars depending on the location and facility. The top 10% earn more than $60,000 per year based on successful clients and marketing of their business. Many trainers earn a bigger salary when connected to a larger facility or resort due to  more wealth distribution throughout that specific community.

- The salary differs due to the population increase. For instance, a personal trainer would have a lot more clients in an urban area, rather than a rural area where few people have access or need a trainer. With more people in a community, word of mouth can spread a lot easier about the success or appeal to the personal trainer, thus resulting in more clients.

- The basis of education to become a personal trainer is a high school diploma. From there, many employers require certifications in CPR and a college diploma. Depending on the employer, some companies require certification in personal training coaching and a degree in exercise science.

- Personality type: Genuine interest in health/fitness, motivated, goal-oriented, patience

Sports Nutritionist:

- Nutritionist working in the field 5 years or less make an average of $55,000 a year. Dietitians in management/business earn more than $80,000 a year

- Geographic locations that have a heavy emphasis on sports in the community tend to look for/hire sports nutritionists for club teams/professional. Most states with professional sports teams need nutritionists for their athletes and are willing to pay a heavier salary than a local/community nutritionist would make.
- Education: B.A./ Masters in dietetics, sports nutrition, etc.
- Personality type: organized, aptitude for science, care for others, excellent communication skills

Sports Chiropractor:
- Avg  Salary: $70,000, many urban areas such as SF have a bigger population, resulting in more clients and easy access to facilities. If it is a self-employed business, chiropractors often need to advertise their business with an accessible location.
- Education: 4 year Doctor of Chiropractic (D.C.), degree in Anatomy, license from National Board of Chiropractic examiners
- Personality: empathy, detail oriented, interest in lifelong learning, interpersonal

  1. I'm interested in nutrition also! Although not specifically sports nutrition, I still find nutrition to be very interesting. However I'm more interested in working with patients in a health setting rather than business or management.

  2. Yes! Somebody who enjoys fitness! Definitely pursue this path. Athletics have changed who I am as a person, my self confidence, my capabilities, and everything else. I will never stop admiring athletes and the determination to push the physical limits of the human body. I hope you get to meet some truly amazing people. I've been apart of volleyball, softball, cheer leading (competitive and high school), as well as track and field (currently pole vaulting). You'll never regret being physically active. I hope you motivate people to reach and maintain fitness.
