Wk 2: Work Readiness Skills

Work Readiness Skill: Diligence
Diligence has certainly become a key factor in successfully contributing to my internship and the work that is required of me. I had an experience where I was asked to sand, paint, and prepare plywood for Tj's bulletin boards - making sure they were smooth to be placed inside the gym for use. I had very little background in prepare wood to be painted so I needed clarification on every individual step that I needed to comprehend in order to do the job accurately and efficiently. I asked various questions on how exactly to "sand" properly as well as the timing for each coating of polyurethane seal so that the product would turn out close to perfect. Since I had very little experience in this type of work, I knew I had to show some care and responsibility for the project, as well as some pride in the fact that Tj trusted me with this sort of task. There was very little room for mistakes and I found the ability to ask clarifying questions extremely crucial regarding that type of project. In return, by utilizing the ability to become "diligent", the wooden bulletins turned out to look quite nice with a clear, smooth coat.

Communication:

Communication was another huge factor that helped me find success during the week's internship hours. Regarding the project mentioned above, Tj asked me to drive to a store and pick up the materials needed for the job. Since I didn't want to forget or misunderstand any of the materials needed, I simply wrote them down on my phone as Tj listed off what he needed. Therefore, I picked up the exact materials needed, without any complaint or mishap. In addition, he asked me to count the money box (profits made from products). I could have easily taken some of the money. Although, I realized that since TJ had enough trust in me to perform that task, I should return that mutual respect and credibility . In that case, a great deal of honesty came into play along with effective communication.

Skills Improvement: Communicating Orally
Especially with clients coming into the gym, I found myself constantly stuttering and jumbling my words. In my head I know what I want to say, yet I have problems explaining my ideas/communication. This is probably due to a nervousness with incoming clients (after all, I want to show Tj what I am capable of). The are many times where clients ask me where I go to school, how I got into crossfit, etc. 7/10 times I usually stutter or repeat myself for no apparent reason, which I feel makes me look less professional. I'm the one who noticed this behavior...no one else. Therefore, it is up to me to fix it. Slowing down, thinking before I speak, and becoming aware of my environment are things I can do to hopefully alleviate this obstacle.
